After being chosen for a bridal party, everyone needs to assess their duties and discuss expectations with the bride and groom. In addition to getting dressed up and walking up the aisle during the ceremony, there are certain things they can do to make the event one to remember.

Responsibilities of the Mother of the Bride

  • If needed, help the bride and groom choose the venues and vendors for the ceremony and reception.
  • Maintain the master guest list.
  • Offer to be the point person for vendors.
  • Attend bridal showers and purchase gifts for each one.
  • Shop for bridal gowns with the bride. Offer suggestions and emotional support.
  • Consult with the bride and mother of the groom then choose a dress according to the bride’s wishes.
  • Escort the bride down the aisle if that is her wish.
  • Join the mother of the groom to light the unity candle if that is part of the ceremony.
  • If not escorting the bride down the aisle, immediately before the ceremony, the usher should seat the mother of the bride on the front row.
  • At the reception, greet guests.
  • Provide emotional support when needed.

Responsibilities of the Father of the Bride

  • Be involved in the planning and budget.
  • Participate in anything the bride wishes.
  • Help prevent tension from tainting this special event by diffusing anxiety.
  • Dress in the style decided by the bride and groom.
  • Be available to help with vendors, the wedding party, guests and any other situations that arise.
  • Escort the bride down the aisle.
  • Dance with the bride immediately after the bride and groom’s first dance.
  • Propose a toast to the new couple. Say only nice things that will make the bride and groom feel good.
  • Stay sober during the reception.

Responsibilities of the Mother of the Groom

  • Contact the bride’s parents as soon as the engagement is announced. Arrange to get together with them.
  • Offer help with finding venues and vendors.
  • Provide a guest list for the groom’s side of the family and friends, keeping the maximum number set by the bride’s family in mind.
  • Attend bridal showers and bring gifts.
  • Discuss wedding day dresses with the mother of the bride and find one that is appropriate.
  • Help plan and host the rehearsal dinner.
  • Join the mother of the bride and light the unity candle if that is part of the ceremony.
  • Receive and greet guests at the reception.
  • Dance with the groom after the bride and groom’s first dance.

  • Get to know and establish a rapport with the bride’s parents.
  • Offer financial assistance with the wedding drink tab.
  • Wear the tuxedo or suit preferred by the groom.
  • Work with the mother of the groom to plan and host the rehearsal dinner.
  • Provide support when the groom needs it.
  • Receive and greet guests at the reception.

Responsibilities of the Maid or Matron of Honor

  • Be the leader of the group of bridesmaids by helping with dress fittings and events leading up to the wedding.
  • Be available to help choose dresses and accessories.
  • Help with anything the bride needs (within reason), such as addressing invitations, finding vendors, etc.
  • Let people know where the couple is registered for gifts.
  • Help the bride get dressed for the wedding.
  • Be available to listen to concerns and try to thwart emotional breakdowns.

  • Help the bride coordinate bridesmaid events.
  • Hold the bridal bouquet during the exchange of wedding vows.
  • If there is no ring bearer, hold the groom’s ring until time for the bride to place it on his finger.
  • If needed, be a witness for the marriage license.
  • Be available to greet guests and help host during the reception.
  • Help keep gift envelopes safe during the reception.
  • Toast the couple after the best man finishes his speech.
  • Be a good listener when the bride needs someone.

  • Be available to the groom before, during and after the ceremony for whatever he needs, such as getting ready for the event or packing for the honeymoon.

  • Be the first to toast the bride and groom at the reception.

  • Be available for fittings and pay for all personal wedding attire.
  • Be a go-to person for wedding information.
  • Attend all pre-wedding events.
  • Help the best man plan the bachelor party if there is one.
  • If asked, usher guests to their seats for the ceremony.
  • Greet guests at the reception.
  • Purchase a wedding gift.
  • Dance with the bridesmaids.

The bride and groom may ask the wedding party to assist in areas outside the typical realm of wedding party duties. A positive attitude and gracious acceptance will keep the day a happy one and go a long way toward solidifying friendships and family relationships.
