Reading (pronounced “Redding”) is in the Thames Valley just over 60km west of London, making it a popular commuter area for those working in the capital. It boasts a Championship football team – Reading FC – and is the home to the Reading Rock Festival that has been running in the town since 1971 and is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe.

Most of the centre of the town south of the main railway station is devoted to a large shopping area with a mix of street side shops and covered malls. Within this area there are also numerous pubs and bars, some of which are excellent – the Hobgoblin being a good example. The list below gives a guide to some of the more interesting ones, but there are others to discover.

Hobgoblin, 2 Broad Street

A delightful pub, the Hobgoblin feels like a traditional drinking den. The wooden-floored small front bar has a corridor at the far end leading to four alcove-style drinking areas. There is not much room, and it would not take many people to fill it, but those that do can enjoy three real ales from the West Berkshire Brewery or an impressive choice of five guest ales as well as real cider and perry. The tables and chairs are wooden to match the floors and walls, which are decorated with a fine collection of pump clips. On the downside, mobile phone use is banned in the bar, so if you have left a babysitter at home this may not be the best venue.
