Inserting and removing the subscriber identification module (SIM) card in your iPhone will become necessary if the SIM card becomes damaged or you are simply switching carriers.

Unlike other mobile phones, the procedure for inserting/removing the SIM card in your iPhone is slightly more involved. This tutorial will explain how to insert and remove your SIM card from your iPhone. To get started you will need a valid SIM card, small paperclip and a first generation iPhone.

iPhone Setup

  • Adjust the paperclip: A small paperclip will be used to open the phone's SIM card bay. Locate a paperclip that will be narrow enough to fit the small hole located on the SIM card tray. Pick up the paperclip and hold the outer end with one hand while securely holding the main body of the paperclip in the other. Pull the outer end away from the main body of the paperclip to create a straight elongated edge. The paperclip will now be fully or partially straightened.
  • Turn-off the phone: Pick-up and hold the iPhone in the upright position, with the screen facing frontwards. Hold down the black power button located near the top edge of the iPhone, until the “slide to power off” prompt is shown on screen. Slide the red on-screen arrow with your finger using a left to right motion to power down the iPhone.

Removing the SIM Card

  • Locate the SIM card tray: The SIM card tray is located between the headset jack and the black power button. Place the straight elongated end of the paperclip into the small circular hole located at the edge of the SIM card tray. Slowly push the paperclip downward until the SIM card tray pops up.
  • Remove the SIM card: Pull out the entire SIM card tray from the iPhone. Remove an existing SIM card before inserting a new one if applicable, otherwise proceed to step 4. The SIM card tray has a rectangular opening located in the back of the tray for easy SIM card removal. Using your finger gently push against the rectangular opening to dislodge the existing SIM card from the SIM card tray.

Inserting the SIM Card

  • Inserting the SIM card: Hold the SIM card you intend to insert by the thumb and index finger, while doing so make sure to avoid touching the gold contacts. The oil produced from human skin may damage the SIM card’s sensitive gold contacts. Place the SIM card carefully into the SIM card tray with the gold contacts facing upwards until you hear a “click” ensuring the SIM card is securely in place. After making sure the SIM card tray is facing the correct direction (the small circular hole of the tray will line up with the SIM card bay’s hole). Take the SIM card tray and slide it back into the phone until it clicks in place.
  • Confirm SIM card installation: Power up your phone, but instead of sliding to power down, you will move the on-screen arrow to take you to the home screen. Confirm your SIM card has been properly inserted by viewing the upper-left hand corner of your phone. It will display the SIM card information such as your wireless provider. You should be able to make and receive calls on your phone.

After executing the aforementioned steps you should be able to insert and remove your phone's SIM card. Remember to handle your SIM card with care by avoiding touching the card's sensitive contacts. Make sure to insert a valid SIM card that your phone will accept. Often times iPhones are locked to one specific carrier, which will prevent you from inserting an unauthorized SIM from another wireless carrier.
