On Wednesday 16th November, a national 'Day of Action Against Fracking' was supported by the Green, Labour and Mana parties. The parties pledged to initiate an investigation into fracking safety concerns as well as calling for an immediate moratorium on fracking.

The Green Party has called for an inquiry into the practice of hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) in New Zealand to be conducted by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment with the results of the inquiry reported back to Parliament. In the meantime New Zealand needed a moratorium on fracking, both onshore and offshore, said Green MP, David Clendon.

There are already national moratoriums on fracking in countries such as South Africa and France, and in parts of the USA, Canada, and Australia (NSW).
